Toyota Defies US Auto Tariffs to Post Record 2025 Sales
Toyota Motor has cemented its position as the world's largest automaker for the third consecutive year, reporting global sales of 10.5 million units in 2025. The achievement comes despite significant headwinds from US tariffs on Japanese vehicles, initially set at 25% before being reduced to 15%.
The combined sales of Toyota and its luxury Lexus division grew 3.7% year-over-year, driven by robust North American demand and global expansion. US hybrid vehicle sales proved particularly strong, with models like the Prius and RAV4 accounting for the majority of the 2.93 million units sold stateside - a 7.3% increase.
Strategic cost-cutting and increased US production helped mitigate tariff impacts, with only about 20% of Toyota/Lexus sales coming from imports. The company's focus on fuel-efficient vehicles aligned perfectly with consumer concerns about rising fuel prices.
